An outdoor educator teaches his students about environmental science, conservation biology, or other topics related to the natural environment. Studies have shown that outdoor learning improves students’ self-awareness, self-control, teamwork skills, community integration, and general behavior at school.

The aim of the “Outdoor Education” course is to introduce the concept of experiential learning through outdoor education that allows participants to create their own meaningful and interesting learning processes for their students. During the course, participants will learn how to engage students to learn from nature and their peers.

Day 1:

Day 2:

  • Hiking activities – going to the mountains
  • What are the key elements of outdoor education?
  • What are the benefits of outdoor education?
  • Workshop: Types of outdoor activities
  • Presentation: Group dynamics
  • Workshop: Leadership outside the classroom
  • Q & A and Discussion on the discussed topics

Day 3:

  • Workshop:
    • Learning through playing
    • Developing an international project
  • Team building exercises and discussion:
    • How to work with colleagues and parents?
    • What are the stereotypes and prejudices about outdoor education?
  • Presentation: Assessment of sites and risks and safety issues of taking students into nature
  • Discussion: Experiences and reflections on the current teaching practices

Day 4:

  • Presentation:
    • Adapting outdoor education games to different age groups
    • Developing personal and social workshops
    • How to teach school subjects outside the classroom
    • Outside education in urban settings
  • Discussion: Assessment of course examples together
  • Praxis: How to approach problems that arise outside the classroom

Day 5:

  • General Summary
  • Erasmus+: Objectives, priorities and evaluation of achievements
  • Certificate distribution

learning outcomes

The participants of this course will

  • get to know about experiential learning and how to apply it in the educational context,
  • get a deeper understanding of outdoors education as a concept and method,
  • be able to provide quality educational activities on using outdoor space as a method,
  • be able to deal with social inclusion and similar issues with new tools,
  • have the ability to successfully use the environment for group and individual learning,
  • learn how to teach students about environment and the dangers it faces,
  • understand the importance of diversifying their education tools,
  • gain broader understanding of practices, policies and systems of education of different countries, cultivate mutual respect, intercultural awareness and embed common educational and training values,
  • revise and develop personal and professional competences, build confidence in promoting innovative and active pedagogies and
  • enrich communication skills, improve foreign language competencies, broaden professional vocabulary and promote EU’s broad linguistic diversity.
